US First Lady Jill Biden visited Naval Station Norfolk on Sunday, to celebrate Friendsgiving with military families. The visit was part of the White House's Joining Forces initiative, which aims to support military families and veterans.

Jill  Biden served mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes to service members and their families at a flag-bedecked hangar on the base. She also spoke to the crowd about the sacrifices that military families make.

"You and your families sacrifice so much, in times of war and peace. You are the backbone, the spine, the sinew of this nation," Jill Biden said.

The Friendsgiving event was a welcome respite for many military families who are often separated from their loved ones during the holidays.

"It's nice to be able to come together with other families who are going through the same thing," said one parent. "It's especially nice to have the First Lady here to show her support."
