Round Rock, Texas, April 5, 2024:

A beacon of hope emerged today in the world of healthcare as Dell Technologies and Northwestern Medicine announced a groundbreaking partnership. This collaboration aims to revolutionize patient care through the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Northwestern Medicine, a leading healthcare provider, embarked on a mission to leverage AI's capabilities to enhance patient experiences and alleviate the burden on physicians facing burnout.

However, limitations in technology and high costs initially hindered their progress. Enter Dell Technologies, a global leader in innovative technology solutions. By joining forces with Dell's AI Innovation Lab, Northwestern Medicine gained access to cutting-edge resources and expertise.

This collaboration led to a significant milestone: the development of a first-of-its-kind generative multimodal large language model (LLM). This AI system acts as a powerful tool for doctors, analyzing chest X-rays and generating draft reports, ultimately aiding in faster and more informed decision-making.

"The potential of AI to accelerate advancements in healthcare is undeniable," stated Jeff Boudreau, Chief AI Officer at Dell Technologies. "By combining Dell's cutting-edge technology with Northwestern Medicine's extensive healthcare knowledge, we are setting a new standard for AI-driven solutions that will improve patient outcomes."

This partnership extends far beyond the initial success of the LLM for chest X-rays. Led by Dr. Mozziyar Etemadi, Medical Director of Advanced Technologies at Northwestern Medicine, a dedicated research and development team is actively pursuing further advancements. They are utilizing Dell's AI technology on multiple projects, pushing the boundaries of healthcare innovation.

Among these projects are a significantly improved version of the LLM specifically designed for generating radiology reports, and a groundbreaking predictive model that analyzes a patient's entire electronic medical record.

"The margin for error in healthcare is minimal, yet the potential for positive change through AI is tremendous," Dr. Etemadi emphasized. "We envision AI not just as a technological marvel, but as a tool that will positively impact countless patients and their lives. Our collaboration with Dell signifies a major leap forward for the healthcare industry. Together, we are creating and applying transformative technology solutions that directly impact patient care and improve outcomes."

The success of this collaboration hinges on a secure foundation. Northwestern Medicine leverages its existing secure colocation infrastructure, providing the confidence needed to move forward rapidly with AI initiatives focused on patient care innovation. This infrastructure incorporates several key Dell technologies, including: Dell PowerEdge XE9680 servers equipped with powerful NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs for intensive AI processing.

Also, NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking, ensuring high-speed communication within the AI system; and Dell PowerScale, PowerFlex, PowerMax, and VxRail – a comprehensive suite of data storage and management solutions crucial for handling the vast amount of medical data involved.

This collaboration between Dell Technologies and Northwestern Medicine signifies a significant step forward in the integration of AI into the healthcare landscape. The success of the initial LLM project demonstrates the immense potential of AI to improve patient care, reduce physician workload, and ultimately save lives. As Northwestern Medicine and Dell continue their partnership, we can expect even more groundbreaking advancements in the years to come.
