NASA Takes to the Skies (Virtually) for Air Taxi Comfort Research

The future of urban transportation might involve buzzing through cityscapes in electric air taxis. But before these futuristic vehicles take flight, NASA is taking a deep dive into passenger comfort – virtually. 

Enter NASA's custom-built virtual reality (VR) flight simulator, a technological marvel designed to understand how passengers experience air taxi rides.  This innovative tool allows researchers to embark on simulated journeys, gathering crucial data that will shape the design of future air taxis. Imagine experiencing a takeoff from a vertiport (landing pad) atop a skyscraper, soaring over a bustling city, and landing at another vertiport – all within the safe environment of a VR simulation.

NASA test pilot Wayne Ringelberg played a pioneering role in calibrating the simulator.  His initial test rides were instrumental in refining the virtual experience before it's opened up to research participants.  Ringelberg's expertise in vertical lift aircraft ensures the simulator accurately reflects the motions and sensations passengers might encounter in a real air taxi. 


Comfort is Key for Public Adoption

The ultimate goal of NASA's research is to create air taxis that feel comfortable and safe for everyone, not just thrill-seekers.  By understanding passenger preferences regarding noise levels, vibration, and motion, NASA can help the air taxi industry design user-friendly vehicles that encourage widespread adoption.  A comfortable and enjoyable air taxi experience is essential for this new transportation technology to gain public trust and become a viable part of urban transportation networks.

This VR simulator is just the beginning. Over the next four years, NASA will conduct a series of human subject research studies using this innovative tool.  Participants will experience simulated air taxi journeys, providing valuable feedback on their comfort levels.
