Louisville sets a bold example by committing to a fully electric waste collection fleet. Join us in celebrating this sustainable achievement.

Louisville and Republic Services Partner for Electric Fleet
The partnership between Louisville and Republic Services is for creating the nation's first all-electric residential waste collection service.

Louisville, Colorado, July 18, 2024:

In a groundbreaking move towards a greener future, the City of Louisville has partnered with Republic Services to electrify its entire residential recycling and waste collection fleet. This ambitious project will see all diesel-powered garbage trucks replaced with electric vehicles by the end of 2024, making Louisville the first city in the United States to achieve a fully electric waste collection service.

The transition to electric vehicles is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. By eliminating tailpipe emissions, the city will contribute to cleaner air and a reduced carbon footprint. Additionally, the electric trucks will operate quieter than their diesel counterparts, improving the quality of life for residents.

Mayor Chris Leh expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are incredibly proud to be leading the nation in adopting a fully electric collection fleet. This initiative aligns with our city’s commitment to sustainability and will create a healthier, quieter, and safer community for all.”

The electric trucks, manufactured by McNeilus, are specifically designed for waste collection and incorporate advanced safety features. These include 360-degree cameras, larger windshields for improved visibility, and advanced driver assistance systems.

Republic Services, a leading waste management company, is supporting Louisville’s efforts by providing the electric trucks and the necessary infrastructure. Richard Coupland, Republic Services vice president of municipal services, praised the city’s dedication to sustainability. “Louisville’s decision to go all-electric is a testament to their leadership in environmental protection. We are honored to partner with them on this historic project.”

Beyond the environmental benefits, the city anticipates long-term cost savings through reduced fuel and maintenance expenses associated with electric vehicles. As the technology continues to advance, it is expected to become increasingly cost-competitive with traditional diesel trucks.

Louisville’s initiative is a significant step forward in the broader push towards electric transportation. By demonstrating the feasibility of operating an entire electric waste collection fleet, the city is paving the way for other municipalities to follow suit.

As the project progresses, it will be closely watched by environmental advocates, government officials, and the waste management industry as a potential model for sustainable urban transportation.
