Singapore City, July 25, 2024:

Singapore-based Sustainable Metal Cloud (SMC) is capitalizing on the burgeoning AI industry by offering a sustainable and efficient solution to the sector's growing energy consumption. The company, which specializes in AI cloud services, is expanding its global footprint to meet the soaring demand for its technology.

The core of SMC's offering is its innovative approach to cooling servers. Unlike traditional air cooling methods, SMC submerges servers in a synthetic oil called polyalphaolefin. This immersion technique drastically reduces energy consumption, a critical factor as the AI industry grapples with skyrocketing energy demands. By partnering with AI chip giant Nvidia and utilizing its high-end H100 AI chips, SMC has created what it terms "sustainable AI factories" in Australia, Singapore, and soon, India and Thailand.

The company's CEO, Tim Rosenfield, announced on Thursday that SMC is eyeing expansion into Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America to cater to the increasing number of clients seeking energy-efficient AI solutions. This aggressive growth strategy is underpinned by the company's recent fundraising efforts, which saw it securing $400 million in equity and $550 million in debt.

The move comes at a time when the AI industry is experiencing unprecedented growth. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has projected a tenfold increase in AI electricity consumption compared to 2023, with global data center energy consumption reaching a staggering 1,000 terawatt-hours in 2026. This is equivalent to the total annual electricity consumption of Japan.

SMC's technology offers a compelling solution to this growing challenge. By significantly reducing energy consumption, the company is not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also helping clients lower operational costs. As the world becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impact of technology, companies like SMC are well-positioned to lead the industry towards a more sustainable future.

The success of SMC's expansion will depend on several factors, including the company's ability to scale its operations, the continued demand for energy-efficient AI solutions, and the competitive landscape. However, given the current trajectory of the AI industry and the growing emphasis on sustainability, the company appears to be well-placed to capitalize on this opportunity.
