Elon Musk's Companies Face Legal Fallout in Brazil
The X and Starlink are embroiled in a legal battle with the Brazilian government. The companies face censorship orders and threats of shutdown, leading to significant consequences.

São Paulo, Brazil – August 30, 2024:

A legal battle between Elon Musk's companies, X (formerly Twitter) and Starlink, and the Brazilian Supreme Court has escalated. A judge has ordered the freezing of Starlink's local bank accounts, while also threatening to shut down X in the country.

The dispute stems from X's refusal to comply with court orders to block certain accounts in Brazil. The company has characterized these orders as "censorship orders" and has closed down its operations in the country as a result.

Now, Judge Alexandre de Moraes is targeting Starlink, demanding that the company be held responsible for the fines levied against X. Starlink has condemned this move, stating that it is "unconstitutional" and violates due process of law.

Moraes has also issued an ultimatum to X, threatening to shut down the social media platform in Brazil if it fails to appoint a legal representative in the country. X has indicated that it expects this shutdown to happen soon.

The company has emphasized that it does not seek to impose U.S. free speech laws on Brazil but simply refuses to comply with what it deems as illegal demands. X plans to publish the court filings related to this case in the coming days.
