Chinese universities are undergoing a significant transformation in their academic offerings, pivoting towards high-tech fields like artificial intelligence and big data. This shift is in direct response to the Chinese government's ambitious plan to cultivate a world-class technological workforce.
A recent report from The Paper revealed that over a dozen Chinese universities have either suspended or eliminated nearly 100 majors, including traditional subjects like animation, acting, and applied physics. In their place, these institutions are introducing new programs focused on emerging technologies, such as biomass science and engineering.
The move is driven by a directive from the Ministry of Education to align university curricula with China's modernization goals. The government is particularly keen on fostering talent in areas like integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, life sciences, and energy.
