A guide on how to use PowerToys to disable a faulty keyboard key on your laptop, preventing unwanted keystrokes and improving your typing experience.

Fix Automatically Pressing Laptop Key
Eliminate repetitive, unwanted keystrokes on a laptop using the PowerToys tool.

August 24, 2024:

Have you ever been typing away on your laptop only to find yourself bombarded with unwanted numbers? A rogue key pressing itself can be a major annoyance, hindering productivity and causing frustration. This happened to me recently when the number six key decided to take on a life of its own!

Recently, I encountered a frustrating issue with my laptop. The number six key beneath the function keys was repeatedly pressing on its own, despite my not touching it.

This was particularly problematic when I tried to enter a digit into the Google search bar, as the key would continuously type "6."

I searched the  solution and finally got it. I kept record of the solution so that you can try it in similar problem.

I heard about a tool named 'PowerToys,' which can disable or map any key from a laptop's keyboard. It can be downloaded from GitHub.
Find it from here (Face license issue, it is not a paid link): Microsoft/PowerToys (github)

Microsoft PowerToys is a suite of utilities designed to enhance the Windows experience. It includes features like ColorPicker, FancyZones, and File Explorer Add-ons.

After downloading the file, I installed it on my computer by opening it from the download folder and clicking the "Install" button. I ensured that I checked the "License Agreement" box before proceeding.

My PowerToys tool began to install. I waited until the installation process reached 100%.

Upon installation, the computer displayed a success message: 'Installation Successfully Completed.

The PowerToys tool can be opened either from its installation location or directly from the Start menu. Just search for 'PowerToys' if it's installed.

Key Re-Mapping with Power Toys

A new window opened. I clicked on the 'Open Settings' link to view the settings section.

In the main window, I enabled the Keyboard Manager and then clicked on the 'Remap a key' button.

I found a new window with the button of "Add Key Remapping". I clicked on that.

The new window requested me to type the irritating key that was malfunctioning. In my case, it was the number "6." I typed the number from its exact location on the keyboard and clicked the "OK" button. You may face another key. If you don't know which key is malfunctioning, you can use an online Keyboard Tester like this one: https://www.keyboardtester.com/

Their custom-built key testing software lets you check every key on your keyboard right from your browser. It's simple, fast, efficient, and free. This American-made tool is a favorite among keyboard users worldwide.

After that, another new window asked me to order what will be with the selected number. I selected 'Disable" option from the right side. And then clicked on the OK button.

Then, the PowerToys tool gave me a warning: 'The following keys do not have assignments: Continue Anyway or Cancel.' I chose to continue. You might not encounter this window. This was the last step, and my key fixing or remapping was complete.

To rearrange the key mapping, open the tool, locate the Keyboard Manager, and delete the previous mapping.

It was a nice experience for me. I found the tool Power Toys helpful, as I want to use the keyboard before purchasing new laptop keyboard.

Consequences of a Broken Key

If you fail to address a broken key on your laptop using PowerToys or other methods, several issues may arise. First, your typing speed and accuracy could deteriorate, as you may need to avoid the faulty key or use alternative methods to type the corresponding character. This can be especially frustrating for tasks that require precise typing, such as writing emails, coding, or creating documents.

Second, a broken key could lead to further damage to your laptop's keyboard. If the key is stuck or malfunctioning, it may put additional strain on the surrounding keys or the keyboard mechanism. Over time, this could result in more keys becoming damaged or even the entire keyboard failing.

Finally, a broken key could affect your overall computing experience. A faulty keyboard can make it difficult to use certain applications or perform specific tasks. For example, if the spacebar is broken, you may have trouble navigating menus or scrolling through documents.

Alternative Solutions

If you are unable to fix a broken key using PowerToys, there are a few alternative solutions you can consider. One option is to physically remove the broken key and replace it with a new one. This may require some technical knowledge or the assistance of a professional.

Another approach is to use on-screen keyboard software. These programs allow you to type using your mouse or touchscreen, bypassing the physical keyboard altogether. While this may not be ideal for long-term use, it can be a temporary solution until you can address the broken key.

If PowerToys Doesn't Work

If PowerToys fails to resolve your broken key issue, you may need to explore other options. First, try restarting your computer or reinstalling PowerToys. Sometimes, simple troubleshooting steps can resolve software-related problems.

If restarting and reinstalling don't work, you might need to consider hardware-related issues. Check for any visible damage to the keyboard or the surrounding area. If you suspect a hardware problem, it may be necessary to consult with a technician for further diagnosis and repair.

Additionally, you could try updating your laptop's drivers or firmware. Outdated drivers or firmware can sometimes cause keyboard malfunctions. By updating these components, you may be able to resolve the issue.

Fortunately, there's a solution for this problem, and it doesn't involve replacing your entire keyboard. This guide details my experience using a free tool called PowerToys to disable the faulty key. PowerToys offers a user-friendly interface and allows you to customize your keyboard settings, making it a valuable tool for anyone experiencing similar issues. By following these steps, you can silence the phantom keystrokes and regain control of your typing experience.
