Canelones, Uruguay – August 30, 2024:
Alphabet's Google announced today plans to establish its second data center in Latin America, located in the Uruguayan city of Canelones. The company will invest more than $850 million in the project.
Google's first Latin American data center opened in 2015 in Quilicura, Chile. The company has since invested a total of $290 million in the Chilean facility.
"We are excited to contribute to the professional and technological development of Uruguay and the entire region with our new data center in Canelones," Google stated in a blog post.
In addition to its expansion in Uruguay, Google is exploring the possibility of building a hyperscale data center near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The center is expected to be operational by 2027.
Earlier this year, Google announced a $3 billion investment in a data center campus in Indiana and expansion plans for its Virginia sites. In May, the company committed $2 billion to develop its first data center and Google Cloud region in Malaysia.
