A new coalition is working to protect taxpayers from tax scams by improving fraud detection, public awareness, and system security.

IRS Leads Fight Against Tax Scams
The IRS is teaming up with state tax agencies and industry partners to combat the surge in tax-related scams and protect taxpayers.

Washington, D.C. – August 19, 2024:

In a concerted effort to protect taxpayers from increasingly sophisticated scams, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced the formation of a new coalition. The coalition brings together federal and state tax agencies, along with key players in the tax industry, including software and financial companies, and tax professional associations.

The move comes in response to a dramatic rise in tax-related scams, which have become increasingly complex and detrimental to taxpayers. These schemes have resulted in significant financial losses for individuals and businesses alike.

The coalition will focus on three primary objectives: enhancing public awareness of emerging scams, improving fraud detection capabilities, and strengthening the overall security of the tax system. By working collaboratively, members will develop innovative strategies to identify and disrupt fraudulent activities.

“Taxpayers deserve peace of mind when filing their returns,” said a IRS Official. “This coalition represents a unified front against those who seek to exploit our system for personal gain. We are committed to protecting taxpayers and holding scammers accountable.”

The new coalition builds upon the success of the Security Summit, a previous initiative aimed at combating tax-related identity theft. By expanding its scope and membership, the IRS aims to create a more robust defense against the evolving threat landscape.

As part of its efforts, the coalition will leverage data analytics and technology to identify patterns of fraudulent behavior and develop advanced fraud detection tools. Additionally, members will work to improve information sharing and collaboration among government agencies and private sector partners.
