SINGAPORE – August 27, 2024:

Singapore and India have added advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, aviation, and maritime connectivity to their high-level ministerial discussions, reflecting the growing importance of these sectors in strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan announced the expansion of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable following its conclusion on August 26. He highlighted the significant opportunities for both countries and their businesses in these areas.

The roundtable, which was attended by ministers from both countries, set the stage for an upcoming official visit to Singapore by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks the second meeting of ministers from Singapore and India through the roundtable, following its inaugural edition in September 2022.

Dr. Balakrishnan emphasized the desire for collaboration between Singapore and India in advanced manufacturing and semiconductors, a sector that India is actively expanding. Singapore, despite its small size, has a strong presence in the semiconductor industry.

India's aviation sector is also poised for significant growth, with the country having ordered over 1,000 planes in the past year alone. Air India and IndiGo have placed large orders for aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, signaling the country's ambition to become a major player in the global aviation market.

The inclusion of these new areas in the bilateral discussions reflects the evolving nature of the relationship between Singapore and India. Both countries are seeking to capitalize on their strengths and explore new avenues for cooperation to drive economic growth and development.
