Stockholm, Sweden – August 30, 2024:

Spotify, a popular music streaming service, has accused Apple of discontinuing the technology that allowed users to control volume using their iOS device's buttons while using Spotify Connect. This move has temporarily disrupted the convenience of controlling connected devices directly from the Spotify app.

While Spotify is working on a solution, users will now have to rely on the volume slider within the iOS app to adjust the sound level. The company clarified that this issue does not affect Bluetooth or AirPlay connections and remains unaffected for Android users.

Spotify Connect, a feature that allows users to sync with speakers, TVs, and other devices from within the app, has been a valuable tool for many. By connecting to compatible devices via Bluetooth or WiFi, users can enjoy full control over their audio experience directly from the Spotify interface.

Prior to this change, users could conveniently use their iPhone's volume buttons to adjust the sound level while using Spotify Connect. This functionality worked seamlessly with Apple TV and HomePod. However, TechCrunch reports that Apple informed Spotify that integrating with HomePod would be necessary to restore these controls. Notably, direct Spotify integration has been absent on HomePod since its launch in 2018, while other streaming services like Pandora, YouTube Music, Deezer, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio have been integrated.

As a temporary workaround, Spotify will now prompt users to adjust volume changes within the app when they attempt to use the volume buttons. This less convenient solution will require users to navigate to the volume slider within the app to make adjustments.

Spotify has once again blamed Apple for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a European Union regulation aimed at preventing "gatekeepers" from engaging in unfair practices. The company cites Apple's restrictions on other music streaming apps on the App Store as evidence of such behavior. Spotify previously faced a €1.8 billion fine in March for these restrictions.

Engadget has reached out to Apple for a comment on the matter. As Spotify continues to work on a solution, users may experience some inconvenience in their audio control experience.
