Gothenburg, Sweden - August 25, 2024:

Swedish automaker Volvo has selected the Mexican state of Nuevo León as the location for its new North American heavy-duty truck manufacturing plant, marking a significant investment in the region.

The company's decision to establish a 160,000 square-meter facility in Ciénega de Flores is a testament to the state's growing appeal as a hub for automotive manufacturing. With an estimated investment of US $700 million, the plant is expected to create 2,500 jobs and begin operations in 2026.

Volvo's choice of Nuevo León is strategic, as the state offers logistical advantages for serving the southwestern and western regions of the United States, as well as Mexico and Latin America. The new factory will support production in the United States, supplying both Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks for the U.S. and Canadian markets. Additionally, it will produce Mack Trucks for Mexico and other Latin American countries.

The announcement of Volvo's investment comes on the heels of Tesla's decision to build a new "gigafactory" in Nuevo León. While the Tesla project is currently on hold, the state's recent success in attracting major automotive manufacturers is a testament to its competitive business environment and infrastructure.

The arrival of Volvo is expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, attracting European automotive suppliers and stimulating job growth for local businesses. The region already boasts two of the largest truck manufacturing plants in North America, with Navistar and Freightliner operating facilities nearby.

Volvo's investment in Nuevo León is a significant milestone for the state's automotive industry. As the company prepares to launch its new factory, it is poised to become a major player in the North American heavy-duty truck market.
