Seattle, Washington, USA – September 18, 2024:
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Amazon, accusing the tech giant of misleading customers through inflated list prices for its Fire TVs. The suit, filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleges that Amazon consistently employed a deceptive pricing strategy to make discounts appear more substantial than they actually were.
The lawsuit claims that Amazon created "fake list prices" for its Fire TVs, making the advertised discounts seem far more enticing than they truly were. The company is accused of omitting crucial information about the duration of sales and the actual history of the list prices, leading customers to believe they were getting a limited-time bargain.
Plaintiff David Ramirez alleges that many of the Fire TVs sold by Amazon had not been anywhere near the advertised list prices for over a year. This deceptive practice, according to the suit, violates Washington's Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits unfair or deceptive business practices.
The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as an injunction to prevent Amazon from continuing this alleged practice. The plaintiff is also referencing a similar case in California from 2021 where Amazon was penalized for using false or misleading list prices.
Amazon has yet to provide a public comment on the allegations. As the case progresses, it will be interesting to see how the company responds to these serious accusations and whether it will face similar consequences to the previous California case.
