European Union (EU) Ministers of Competitiveness convened in Brussels on September 26, 2024, to address pressing issues related to the future of European competitiveness and the challenges facing industry and businesses within the single market. Chaired by Máté LÓGA, Minister of State for Economic Strategy, Industry, Financial Resources and Macroeconomic Analysis of Hungary, the meeting featured in-depth discussions on key policy areas.
The first policy debate centered on the strategies necessary to maintain and enhance European competitiveness in the face of global economic challenges. Ministers explored various approaches to bolstering innovation, improving productivity, and ensuring that European industries remain competitive in the international marketplace.
The second policy debate focused on the state aid framework and its role in supporting EU policy objectives. Ministers examined how the current framework can be effectively utilized to promote growth, investment, and job creation while ensuring a level playing field for businesses across the EU.
In an informal lunch session, Ministers exchanged views on the opportunities and challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the single market. They discussed ways to help SMEs benefit from the advantages of the single market, such as improved access to markets, reduced regulatory burdens, and increased cross-border trade.
The meeting underscored the importance of continued cooperation and policy coordination among EU member states to address the complex challenges facing European industries and businesses.
