Imphal, Manipur, India - September 16, 2024:

Residents of Manipur woke up to restored internet services on Monday, September 16th, 2024, after a six-day suspension imposed by the state government. The ban, which began on September 10th, was implemented as a "preventive measure" in response to student protests demanding the removal of top officials due to perceived shortcomings in handling militant attacks.

The decision to lift the internet ban followed a review of the prevailing law and order situation by the state government. An order issued by the Home Department stated, "The State Government has reviewed the prevailing law and order situation in the State and decided to lift any form of temporary internet suspension in the State of Manipur which was imposed as a preventive measure in public interest."

The suspension of internet services had caused significant disruption to daily life in Manipur, impacting communication, education, and business activities. It also drew criticism from human rights groups who argued that the ban was an infringement on freedom of expression.

While internet access has been restored, the state government has urged users to refrain from activities that could necessitate another suspension. Additionally, schools across the state are scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, September 18th.

This development marks a return to normalcy for many residents of Manipur. However, it remains to be seen if the underlying concerns that led to the protests and internet shutdown have been adequately addressed.
