Lima, Peru - September 23, 2024:

The British Embassy in Lima is seeking bids for a practical action research project aimed at advancing mining and human rights in Peru. The project will focus on building insights and informing partner interventions and policymaking to strengthen the UK's reputation as a supporter of sustainable growth in the country.

The UK has long been a global advocate for responsible business practices, emphasizing the importance of companies adhering to human rights standards in all their activities. As a member of the cross-government Working Group on Business and Human Rights, the UK is committed to supporting countries in adopting the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and other voluntary commitments.

Peru's mining sector, a significant contributor to the country's economy, has been increasingly impacted by human rights standards. While mining companies have made efforts to mitigate negative externalities and reduce barriers, challenges remain due to the complexities of responsible mining practices and the growth of illegal and informal mining.

The project's objective is to support the UK's commitment to sustainable growth and human rights in Peru by conducting research and providing technical assistance to relevant stakeholders. Successful bidders will demonstrate a creative and impactful approach to ensuring that voluntary standards in business and human rights are clear for Peruvian stakeholders and promoting effective implementation.

A comprehensive assessment of the current state of formal and informal mining and human rights in Peru, referencing existing national and international voluntary commitments, with a focus on OECD guidelines. Mapping of the mining and human rights ecosystem in Peru, identifying barriers and facilitators to action.

Providing technical assistance to government agencies, mining companies, and civil society organizations to support the implementation of voluntary commitments on business and human rights. Monitoring and evaluating the progress and impact of technical assistance.

Projects should propose a budget of up to £60,000 and are expected to begin in October 2024 and be completed by March 2025.

Interested organizations should submit a completed "Project Proposal Form" and "Activity Based Budget" along with any supporting documents to the UK embassy in Lima.

Proposal Form for Activities / Projects between £10,000 and £80,000.

This project offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to sustainable mining practices and human rights protections in Peru. By supporting research and technical assistance, the UK aims to play a positive role in promoting responsible business conduct and fostering a more equitable and sustainable mining sector.
