KIEV, Ukraine - September 15, 2024:
As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, the education of millions of children remains under siege. Education Cannot Wait (ECW), a global fund for education in emergencies, is calling for increased protection and funding to ensure that Ukrainian children have access to quality education.
A recent high-level UN mission to Ukraine highlighted the devastating impact of the war on education. Over 4 million children have had their education disrupted, with 600,000 unable to attend in-person classes due to ongoing fighting, attacks, and displacement.
Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of ECW, emphasized the urgent need to protect schools from attacks and provide life-saving access to education. "This cruel war must stop now," she said. "As a global community, we must rise to the challenge before us to ensure that every girl and boy in Ukraine has access to the safety, hope, and opportunity that only a quality education can provide."
ECW and its partners have provided over $26.9 million in support to education programs in Ukraine since 2017. These programs have reached over 360,000 children, including 65% girls. However, more funding is urgently needed to address the growing crisis.
The constant threat of violence and displacement has had a profound impact on the mental health and well-being of Ukrainian children. ECW's support includes investments in mental health and psychosocial support, as well as targeted support for girls and children with disabilities.
The Global Business Coalition for Education (GBCE) has pledged $50 million to support ECW's four-year strategic plan. So far, $39 million has been mobilized, including donations of laptops to schools and teachers in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
Despite these efforts, the situation remains dire. Deadly attacks on educational institutions continue, and over 1,300 schools have been damaged or destroyed since the war began. As a result, many children are unable to attend school, and even those who do face the constant threat of violence.
ECW and its partners are calling for an additional $600 million to provide children in crisis-affected countries, including Ukraine, with high-quality, holistic education. By investing in education, we can help rebuild communities, promote peace, and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
