Canberra, Australia – October 2, 2024:
Australia and New Zealand have further strengthened their defense partnership with the appointment of Major General Hugh McAslan, DSD, of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), as Australia's newest Deputy Chief of Joint Operations.
This historic appointment marks the highest-ranking foreign military officer to hold a position within the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It follows the recent appointment of ADF Brigadier Michael Bassingthwaighte, DSM, as the Deputy Commander of Headquarters Joint Force New Zealand.
Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles and New Zealand Defense Minister Judith Collins welcomed the appointments during discussions at the South Pacific Defense Ministers' Meeting in Auckland.
The exchange of senior military officers between the two countries aims to enhance interoperability and strengthen the longstanding defense partnership between Australia and New Zealand.
Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral Justin Jones AO CSC, RAN, expressed his delight at Major General McAslan's appointment. "Integrating Australian and New Zealand senior military officers into each other's defense forces is a crucial step towards enhanced interoperability and our ability to deploy together," he said.
Major General Hugh McAslan, DSD, shared his enthusiasm for the new role. "Our nations and our armed forces share a unique history and heritage, and this appointment will only strengthen that bond," he said. "I look forward to working alongside the Australian Defence Force and continuing to forge the Anzac spirit."
The appointment of Major General McAslan underscores the strong and enduring relationship between Australia and New Zealand, and their commitment to working together to address regional and global security challenges.
