A recent forum in Riyadh brought together stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the Saudi labor market, highlighting the importance of social dialogue and inclusive policies.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – October 9, 2024:
The International Labour Organization (ILO) has emphasized the critical role of social dialogue in addressing the profound changes transforming the world of work, particularly in the Arab States region.
Speaking at the 14th Social Dialogue Forum in Riyadh, Peter Rademaker, ILO Deputy Regional Director for Arab States, highlighted the growing importance of flexible forms of employment, such as the platform economy and gig work. While these new models offer opportunities for growth, they also pose challenges related to job security, social protection, and workers' rights.
Rademaker stressed the need for constructive dialogue between governments, employers, and workers to create policies that protect workers' rights while allowing businesses to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving economy. He emphasized the importance of fostering workplace dialogue at the enterprise level to ensure productivity, good working conditions, and reduced turnover.
The Social Dialogue Forum, held under the patronage of Saudi Arabia's Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Ahmed bin Sulaiman Al Rajhi, brought together government officials, experts, business leaders, and representatives from labor organizations. Participants discussed key issues facing the Saudi labor market, including the challenges of sustaining nationalization of the workforce, developing skills training programs, and promoting competitiveness.
Minister Al Rajhi underscored the importance of social dialogue in enhancing understanding and cooperation among stakeholders. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting initiatives that contribute to sustainable development and a competitive labor market.
The ILO's support for Saudi Arabia includes a joint development cooperation program aimed at advancing employment and labor market policies, strengthening social dialogue, ensuring the application of fundamental principles and rights at work, improving skills governance, and enhancing occupational safety and health.
By fostering social dialogue and promoting inclusive labor market policies, the ILO seeks to help the Arab States region navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the changing world of work.
