Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is under fire for its handling of hate speech related to immigration. The company's independent Oversight Board has invited public comments on controversial posts that target immigrants and refugees.
The board is particularly interested in assessing whether Meta's current policy, which protects refugees, migrants, immigrants, and asylum-seekers from the most severe attacks, is sufficient. Two specific cases have been highlighted to illustrate the challenges involved.
In one instance, a Polish far-right coalition party posted a meme using a derogatory term for Black people. Despite numerous reports and significant engagement, Meta decided to keep the post on the platform. Similarly, a German Facebook page shared an image that promoted harmful stereotypes about immigrants. Both posts were ultimately upheld after review by Meta's policy experts.
The Oversight Board's decision to examine these cases underscores the growing concern about the spread of hate speech online. The board's recommendations, while nonbinding, could have a significant impact on Meta's policies and practices.
