Netflix Faces Backlash Over Removal of Palestinian Films

Human rights groups condemn Netflix's decision to remove Palestinian films. The platform insists the move is necessary due to licensing issues, sparking controversy and debate.

Netflix Denies Censorship, Blames License Expiry for Film Removal
Netflix clarifies that the removal of Palestinian films is due to expired licenses, not censorship, despite widespread criticism from human rights groups.

Los Gatos, California, USA - October 26, 2024:

Netflix has refuted claims that it has deleted Palestinian films from its platform. Instead, the streaming giant clarified that a specific collection, "Palestine Stories," featuring 19 films, is being removed due to the expiration of licensing agreements.

The platform emphasized its commitment to diverse content and global storytelling, stating that it continues to invest in a wide range of films and TV shows to cater to its diverse membership.

However, the move has sparked significant backlash from human rights organizations and activists. Freedom Forward, a San Francisco-based human rights organization, has spearheaded a campaign demanding an explanation from Netflix. The organization, along with several other groups, has issued an open letter and petition expressing deep concern over the removal of these films, particularly at a time of heightened tensions and suffering in the region.

Sunjeev Bery, executive director of Freedom Forward, argued that Netflix should prioritize public access to Palestinian films, especially during challenging times. He questioned the platform's lack of transparency regarding the film removals and its apparent lack of effort to renew the necessary licenses.

Netflix had initially launched the "Palestine Stories" collection in October 2021, showcasing a diverse range of films by Palestinian filmmakers or about Palestinian stories. The collection included works by renowned directors like Annemarie Jacir, Mai Masri, and Farah Nabulsi.

While the Pakistani version of Netflix currently retains two films from the collection, the global impact of this removal has raised concerns about the availability of Palestinian cinema on major streaming platforms. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Netflix will reconsider its decision or take steps to ensure the continued accessibility of Palestinian films on its platform.
