London, UK - October 9, 2024:
The University of Oxford has cemented its position at the pinnacle of global higher education, securing the top spot in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 for a record-breaking ninth consecutive year. This achievement surpasses Harvard University’s previous record of eight consecutive years at the number one spot.
Despite Oxford's dominance, the rankings also highlight significant shifts in the higher education landscape. The United States and the United Kingdom, traditionally powerhouses in global university rankings, have experienced declines in their overall reputation.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has emerged as the highest-ranked US university for the first time, surpassing Stanford University. However, the global reputation of US universities has fallen to a record low, indicating a decline in perception of their teaching and research quality.
The United Kingdom, once a dominant force in the rankings, has seen its top universities slip for the second consecutive year. This decline is attributed to a severe financial crisis facing the higher education sector and a decrease in research reputation.
While the United States and the United Kingdom have faced challenges, other regions have shown significant growth. China has seen a surge in the number of ranked universities, with 26 institutions improving their positions and six falling. Egypt, Nigeria, France, and Brazil have also experienced notable increases in the number of universities represented in the rankings.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 include 2,092 universities from 115 countries and regions. The rankings are based on 18 performance indicators across five pillars: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, international outlook, and industry income.
