Ankara, Turkiye --- October 16, 2024:

Türkiye is drafting a new law to support the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) as part of its broader nuclear energy strategy. This move aims to diversify the country's energy sources and complement its planned conventional nuclear power plants.

Türkiye has ambitious plans to expand its nuclear energy capacity, with at least three nuclear power plants planned for a total of 15,000 megawatts (MW). The first plant, Akkuyu, is under construction with Russian assistance, while the second and third plants are being considered for Sinop and Thrace.

SMRs, with a capacity of 300-400 MW, offer a more cost-effective and space-efficient alternative to traditional nuclear reactors. They can be built closer to consumption centers, reducing transmission losses.

The new legislation will address the current legal framework, which does not specifically cover SMRs. The government aims to have the law passed by Parliament next year.

Türkiye's pursuit of nuclear energy is motivated by its limited oil and natural gas resources and the growing need for reliable and clean energy sources. By diversifying its energy mix, Türkiye seeks to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and achieve its carbon neutrality goals.

In addition to the planned conventional nuclear plants, Türkiye is also exploring the potential of SMRs. Talks with the United States and China regarding SMR construction are ongoing.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar recently met with the Vice President of China National Nuclear Corporation to discuss potential cooperation in nuclear energy. Türkiye aims to reach a total nuclear energy capacity of 20,000 MW by 2050.
