Ankara, Türkiye – October 21, 2024:
The ministry's ambitious target is part of a broader effort to reduce Türkiye's dependence on imported energy sources and ensure the security of its electricity and natural gas supply. By increasing the share of renewable energy, Türkiye can not only reduce its carbon footprint but also strengthen its energy independence.
To achieve this goal, the ministry plans to increase the installed capacity of solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric power plants. Türkiye already has a significant renewable energy base, with an installed capacity of 32,195 megawatts (MW) of hydroelectric power plants (HPP), 12,369 MW of wind power plants (WPP), 18,756 MW of solar power plants (SPP), and 1,691 MW of geothermal power plants (GPP). The ministry aims to expand these capacities significantly by 2025.
In addition to increasing the use of renewable energy, the ministry also aims to reduce the share of natural gas in electricity production and lower the loss rate in electricity distribution and transmission. By implementing these measures, Türkiye can further diversify its energy mix and improve the efficiency of its electricity grid.
The ministry's budget proposal for 2025 allocates TL 45.3 billion ($1.33 billion) to support these initiatives. This significant investment demonstrates the government's commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and building a more sustainable energy future.
If successful, Türkiye's efforts to increase its renewable energy capacity will have far-reaching benefits. Not only will it contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment, but it will also create new jobs and boost economic growth. Furthermore, by reducing its reliance on imported energy sources, Türkiye can strengthen its energy security and become less vulnerable to global energy price fluctuations.
Türkiye's ambitious renewable energy targets are a testament to the country's commitment to a sustainable future. By investing in renewable energy and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, Türkiye is positioning itself as a leader in the global transition to a clean energy economy.
