Redmond, Washington, USA --- October 13, 2024:
Microsoft is preparing to significantly expand its Xbox Cloud Gaming service, enabling players to stream any game from their personal library. Previously limited to a curated selection of Game Pass titles, this expansion is set to launch in November, opening up thousands of additional games for streaming.
Dubbed "Project Lapland," this update marks a major step forward for Xbox Cloud Gaming. According to sources speaking with The Verge, the service will no longer restrict users to Game Pass offerings; instead, subscribers can stream any game they own on their Xbox account. The rollout will begin with an exclusive preview for Xbox Insiders before expanding to the wider public.
Initially launched as xCloud in 2019, the platform aimed to allow gamers to "stream any game on any device." However, the early versions of Xbox Cloud Gaming were limited to Game Pass titles. Xbox Gaming CEO Phil Spencer announced earlier this year that the full expansion would be realized in 2023, fulfilling the original vision.
Despite this major upgrade, not all games may be immediately available for streaming. Licensing constraints could result in some publishers opting out initially, but a substantial increase in content is expected.
The November update coincides with Microsoft’s recent court victory over Google, which requires Google to end mandatory use of Google Play Billing for in-app purchases. This ruling clears the way for Microsoft to enable direct purchases and streaming access through its Xbox App on Android, starting in November. Xbox president Sarah Bond confirmed that players will soon be able to buy games directly through the app and stream them immediately.
This development aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to establish a browser-based Xbox mobile store. Initially, the store will offer in-game items and exclusive offers, with plans to expand to first-party game purchases in the future. As Microsoft broadens its cloud gaming platform and purchasing options, Xbox fans can look forward to more flexibility and access across devices.
