Islamabad, Pakistan --- November 16, 2024:

In a move aimed at bolstering security, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed a temporary suspension on mobile internet services in specific regions of Balochistan. This decision, effective immediately, comes in response to a recent spate of terrorist attacks that have plagued the province and neighboring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The past few months have witnessed a significant uptick in terrorist activities within Balochistan, with over 70 lives lost in various incidents. The most recent attack, a devastating suicide bombing at Quetta Railway Station on November 9th, claimed 26 lives and injured 62 others.

While the PTA has not disclosed the exact areas affected by the internet and mobile service suspension, reports suggest that the blackout encompasses several districts, including Makran, Awaran, Chagai, Kharan, parts of Khuzdar, Kalat, Bolan, Harnai, and Duki. These regions have been particularly susceptible to terrorist attacks and militant insurgency.

The government's decision to restrict digital communication is a precautionary measure intended to hinder the ability of extremist groups to coordinate attacks and spread propaganda. However, the move has also raised concerns about its potential impact on businesses, education, and overall economic activity in the affected areas.

In an effort to address the escalating security challenges, the Balochistan government has initiated the development of a comprehensive provincial action plan. This plan aims to strengthen governance, enhance security measures, and effectively combat terrorism, crime, extortion, and smuggling.

The Balochistan Chief Secretary, Shakeel Qadir Khan, recently briefed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti on the proposed action plan. The plan outlines a comprehensive strategy to counter terrorist threats and improve law enforcement capabilities.

As the security situation in Balochistan remains volatile, it remains to be seen how long the internet and mobile service suspension will remain in effect. The government will need to carefully balance the need for security with the economic and social implications of such restrictions.
