Ottawa, Canada - December 24, 2024:

Canada's Competition Bureau announced on Monday that it is taking legal action against Rogers Communications Inc., alleging the telecommunications giant misled consumers with its advertising of "unlimited" data plans.

The Bureau claims that Rogers' advertisements falsely implied that customers on certain phone plans could use data without limitations. However, the Bureau contends that these plans in fact have data caps, after which internet speeds are drastically reduced by over 99%.

Rogers has disputed the Bureau's assessment, arguing that its plans are standard in the Canadian market and expressing concern that the Bureau has singled out the company after five years. The company has stated its intention to defend itself against the allegations.

The Competition Bureau has filed an application with the Competition Tribunal, seeking an order to stop Rogers from using misleading advertising practices. The Bureau is also requesting that Rogers pay a penalty and provide restitution to affected customers.

This legal action highlights the importance of accurate advertising and consumer protection in the telecommunications sector.
