South Korean Researchers Develop 'Iron Man' Robot to Aid Paraplegics

Seoul, South Korea --- December 23, 2024:

A team of researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed a groundbreaking wearable robot that allows paraplegic individuals to walk, climb stairs, and navigate obstacles. This innovative technology, dubbed the "WalkON Suit F1," represents a significant step forward in assistive robotics.

The WalkON Suit F1 is a lightweight exoskeleton constructed from aluminum and titanium, weighing approximately 50 kilograms. Powered by 12 electronic motors, it simulates human joint movements, enabling users to regain mobility. A key feature of this exoskeleton is its ability to approach and attach itself to the user, making it easier to use and integrate into daily life.

"It can approach me wherever I am, even when I'm sitting in a wheelchair, and be worn to help me stand up, which is one of its most distinct features," said Kim Seung-hwan, a paraplegic team member and part of the KAIST team. Kim successfully demonstrated the exoskeleton's capabilities, walking at a speed of 3.2 kilometers per hour, climbing stairs, and navigating obstacles.

To ensure user safety and stability, the WalkON Suit F1 incorporates advanced sensors that monitor 1,000 signals per second, anticipating user movements and adjusting accordingly. Integrated "eyes" in the form of front-facing lenses analyze the environment, detecting obstacles and stair heights, compensating for the sensory limitations often experienced by individuals with complete paraplegia.

The development of the WalkON Suit F1 was inspired by the iconic "Iron Man" character, highlighting the team's ambition to translate science fiction into reality. This innovative technology holds immense promise for improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and represents a significant step towards a more inclusive and accessible future.
