Male, Maldives —December 31, 2024:

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has installed 20 new generator sets across 19 islands in the Maldives to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. The announcement was made Tuesday, highlighting the company’s commitment to meeting the growing energy demands in the islands.

STELCO, a state-owned utility provider, supplies electricity to the capital Male’ region and islands in Kaafu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Vaavu Atoll. The newly installed generators have a combined capacity of 9,198 kilowatts, significantly enhancing the energy infrastructure in these areas.

Currently, STELCO operates electricity services in five islands in Kaafu Atoll, six islands in Alifu Alifu Atoll, six islands in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and three islands in Vaavu Atoll, with 36 power plants established across these locations.

According to STELCO, the new generators were deployed to meet rising electricity demand and to improve service reliability. The company assured residents that the upgraded capacity would support consistent energy delivery.

In addition to expanding conventional energy services, STELCO has been actively pursuing renewable energy solutions. This year, the company installed an 11,000-kilowatt solar power system at its main power station in Male’, part of its broader initiative to transition towards environmentally friendly energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

STELCO is also diversifying its business operations. A key development this year was the launch of a specialized business center aimed at selling locally manufactured generators. This initiative will enable faster delivery of generators to islands in case of breakdowns, further bolstering energy resilience across the Maldives.

The addition of these generators and the focus on renewable energy mark a significant step in STELCO's efforts to modernize the energy infrastructure and meet the Maldives’ growing power needs sustainably.
