Dhaka, Bangladesh — December 25, 2024:
Prof. Dr. Md. Taher Abu Saif, a professor from the University of Illinois, USA, has called for the establishment of a micro-electronics lab in Bangladesh to enhance advanced research. He made this appeal during a seminar titled “Biomechanics of Mental Health” held on December 24, 2024, at United International University (UIU) in Dhaka.
Prof. Saif, who serves in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, was the keynote speaker at the event. The seminar was also attended by Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Badruzzaman, Vice Chancellor of BUET, as the Guest of Honor. The program was presided over by Prof. Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) at UIU. Additional speakers included Prof. Dr. Hasan Sarwar, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering at UIU, and Prof. Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Director of CSIRS-UIU and Professor of Civil Engineering. Dr. Rumana Afrin, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at UIU, delivered the welcome address, while Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mizanur Rahaman of the Civil Engineering Department concluded the event with the vote of thanks.
The seminar underscored the importance of advancing research in micro-electronics, a field that has the potential to drive innovation and strengthen Bangladesh’s position in global scientific research. Prof. Saif emphasized the need for collaboration among leading educational institutions in Bangladesh, including UIU and BUET, to establish such a facility. He believes that a micro-electronics lab would significantly enhance the country’s research infrastructure and contribute to technological progress.
In his address, Prof. Saif also shared insights on the role of physical activity in brain health. He highlighted that even after the age of 65, individuals can continue to generate new brain cells through regular exercise, walking, and moderate physical activity, which helps maintain brain cell functionality.
The Guest of Honor, Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Badruzzaman, shared his experiences in education and research, stressing the importance of quality higher education and research in Bangladesh. He expressed hope that increased collaboration between UIU and other institutions would create more opportunities for research, innovation, and educational advancement.
The event was attended by a wide array of participants, including UIU faculty, students, government officials, researchers, and journalists, all of whom contributed to discussions about fostering cutting-edge research in Bangladesh.
