The United States Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS) has announced a major partnership with the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development to launch a new initiative aimed at shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Americas. The project, titled “Developing an Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework for the Americas,” was unveiled during a special ceremony at the VII Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Science and Technology in the OAS.
Backed by over $1.1 million in U.S. government funding, the initiative seeks to promote the development of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI policy frameworks and ecosystems among OAS member states. It aims to address the challenges and opportunities posed by AI technologies across the Western Hemisphere while fostering collaboration between governments, private enterprises, and academia.
Establishing responsible and rights-based policies for AI development and deployment.
Documenting strategies to mitigate risks, minimize negative impacts, and amplify positive outcomes.
Encouraging the adoption and implementation of international AI standards.
