Jakarta, Indonesia - January 7, 2025:
Apple Inc. is in negotiations with the Indonesian government to lift a sales ban on the iPhone 16. This follows a meeting between Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita and Apple executives on Tuesday.
The ban was imposed last year after Apple failed to meet the government's requirement that at least 40% of smartphone components be manufactured locally. Apple currently lacks manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, a key market with over 280 million consumers.
While the specifics of Apple's new investment proposal remain undisclosed, Minister Kartasasmita indicated that the company must significantly increase its commitment beyond previous offers. Indonesia has emphasized the importance of local value addition and may seek investments that contribute to the development of Indonesia's domestic technology sector.
This update signs the growing importance of local content requirements in the global smartphone market and highlights the challenges faced by multinational companies in navigating complex regulatory environments.
