Tripoli, Libya — January 25, 2025:
Libya has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening energy cooperation with Türkiye, describing the nation as a strategic partner in both traditional and renewable energy sectors.
Speaking at the Libya Energy and Economic Summit in Tripoli, Libyan Oil and Gas Minister Khalifa Abdulsadek emphasized Türkiye’s pivotal role in global energy transit and its advanced renewable technologies. "A significant portion of natural gas heading to Europe goes through Türkiye. Also, it has advanced technology in renewables. We want Türkiye as a strategic partner in all energy sectors," he said.
Abdulsadek revealed that discussions with Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar in November explored opportunities to expand collaboration beyond fossil fuels to unconventional and renewable energy projects.
Libya, which holds Africa's largest hydrocarbon reserves, has faced challenges in stabilizing its energy sector after years of political turmoil and conflict. The minister underscored Türkiye’s historical involvement in Libyan energy projects and reiterated the invitation for Türkiye to increase its activities in the country.
"We are offering offshore areas for bidding and see enormous potential for collaboration on multiple projects," Abdulsadek said, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
The partnership builds on agreements such as the 2019 maritime and security pacts and the 2022 energy exploration deal to explore hydrocarbons in Libya’s exclusive economic zone.
Libya is looking to leverage its geographic advantages, including abundant sunlight and a vast coastline, to develop renewable energy projects. Abdulsadek noted that Libya’s potential for solar, wind, and hydrogen energy aligns with Türkiye’s expertise in these areas.
"Libya offers great opportunities for investing in renewables. We understand Türkiye is one of the international partners we are considering for these projects," the minister stated.
With regular bilateral meetings to evaluate progress, Abdulsadek expressed optimism about a future where both countries benefit mutually. "We see Türkiye as a hub for energy now, and we believe the future holds promising joint projects," he said.
The collaboration signals a commitment to bolstering energy security and exploring sustainable initiatives, further strengthening ties between the two nations.
