Microsoft has announced plans to equip one million South Africans with artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity skills by 2026. This ambitious initiative, part of the company's broader AI national skilling program, aims to empower individuals across all sectors, including businesses, government entities, and youth.
Lillian Barnard, President for Microsoft Africa, revealed the target during the company's "AI Tour" in Johannesburg. While the specific investment for this endeavor remains undisclosed, Barnard emphasized its significance in preparing South African citizens for a future increasingly dominated by AI.
"By providing skilling opportunities and access to industry-recognized certifications, our youth will be well-positioned to compete on the global stage," Barnard stated.
This initiative aligns with Microsoft's commitment to fostering digital skills across the African continent. As the first global "hyperscale" public cloud provider to establish data centers in South Africa, the company has already trained four million Africans in the past five years. Building upon this success, Microsoft has pledged to further expand its training efforts to reach 30 million Africans within the next five years.
