San Francisco, California, USA — January 29, min 2025:
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced on Tuesday that it is actively working with the U.S. government to protect American artificial intelligence (AI) technology from foreign adversaries, particularly China.
In a statement, OpenAI said Chinese firms are "constantly" attempting to gain insights from U.S. AI leaders to enhance their own AI models. The company emphasized its commitment to safeguarding its intellectual property, implementing countermeasures to prevent unauthorized access, and carefully deciding which advanced AI capabilities to release publicly.
"As the leading builder of AI, we engage in countermeasures to protect our IP, including a careful process for which frontier capabilities to include in released models," OpenAI stated. "We believe it is critically important that we are working closely with the U.S. government to best protect the most capable models from efforts by adversaries and competitors to take U.S. technology."
The remarks come as the White House assesses potential national security risks posed by DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company. David Sacks, the White House's AI and crypto czar, warned that techniques such as "distillation" could allow Chinese firms to extract knowledge from U.S. AI leaders, raising concerns about technology transfer.
The Biden administration has been ramping up efforts to regulate AI and ensure national security in the face of growing global competition. OpenAI's pledge to collaborate with the government highlights the increasing importance of protecting cutting-edge AI developments from potential exploitation by foreign entities.
