Taipei, Taiwan — January 21, 2025:

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) announced on Tuesday that all its sites are operational following a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Taiwan late Monday night. The earthquake, centered in a mountainous rural area, caused only minor damage and resulted in light injuries.

As a precaution, TSMC evacuated workers from some facilities in central and southern Taiwan after the earthquake, which occurred just after midnight. The company confirmed that post-earthquake structural inspections were completed at all sites, ensuring the safety of the buildings. Operations have since resumed gradually.

In an emailed statement, TSMC confirmed that water, power, and workplace safety systems are functioning normally across all its sites. "Currently, all TSMC sites are operating, and detailed inspections and impact assessments are ongoing," the company said.

The company also clarified that its construction sites were unaffected and have continued regular operations following environmental safety checks.

According to Taiwan's fire department, 27 people were treated for injuries after the quake. Taiwan's power provider, Taipower, reported that electricity was fully restored to all 30,000 affected households by mid-morning.

Taiwan, located at the junction of two tectonic plates, is prone to frequent earthquakes. The last major earthquake occurred in April, with a 7.2 magnitude tremor in Hualien County on the east coast, which tragically killed 13 people.
