With a focus on energy efficiency, Türkiye plans to invest $20.2 billion by 2030, aiming for major energy savings and enhanced environmental sustainability.
Ankara, Turkiye - January 12, 2025:
Türkiye is set to invest over $20 billion in energy efficiency projects by 2030, with a focus on sectors such as industry, buildings, and public lighting. This initiative is part of the country’s second National Energy Efficiency Action Plan, which aims for substantial energy savings and environmental benefits.
Bilal Düzgün, head of the Energy Efficiency and Environment Department at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, revealed that between 2017 and 2023, Türkiye invested $8.5 billion under its first National Energy Efficiency Action Plan. The new plan, covering 2024 to 2030, envisions a total investment of $20.2 billion.
Düzgün emphasized that energy efficiency is vital for sustainable development and addressing climate change. He also highlighted Türkiye's achievements in this field, noting that the country has reduced energy intensity by more than 30% over the past two decades, making it a leader among OECD countries. In 2023, Türkiye achieved a 4.5% energy savings rate, significantly surpassing the global average of 1%.
As part of the new action plan, various sectors will receive funding, including grants of up to $610,000 for energy efficiency projects in offices, shopping malls, hospitals, and large campuses. The government also aims to ensure that all new public buildings obtain green building certification by 2026, with an expected savings of $1.5 billion annually.
Other initiatives include the expansion of heat pump installations, particularly in Türkiye’s Mediterranean and Aegean regions, and a significant upgrade of public street lighting. By 2025, Türkiye plans to install 500,000 additional LED fixtures, with the total expected to reach 3.75 million by 2028, resulting in annual savings of $20 million.
