London, UK — January 30, 2025:

Vodafone has completed the UK’s first satellite-enabled smartphone video call, marking a significant step toward eliminating mobile "not spots" across the country. The call was made from a remote mountain in Ceredigion, west Wales, as part of Vodafone’s plan to integrate satellite connectivity into its UK network by the end of the year, with a wider rollout across Europe in 2026.

Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle described the achievement as a breakthrough for universal connectivity. "We are opening the door to connecting people in the UK, wherever they are," she said. The new technology aims to provide additional coverage rather than replacing existing mobile masts and towers.

The initiative is a collaboration with AST SpaceMobile, a satellite firm that currently has limited satellites in orbit. Experts caution that more satellites will be needed to provide seamless coverage. Regulatory approvals also remain a challenge, with Ofcom planning to review satellite-based mobile services in early 2025.

While the development promises improved connectivity, astronomers have raised concerns about the growing number of satellites cluttering low Earth orbit. Scientists warn that increased satellite traffic could interfere with astronomical research and make it harder to detect potentially hazardous asteroids.

Despite these concerns, astronaut Tim Peake remains optimistic. "There’s plenty of room in space," he said, while emphasizing the need for responsible satellite management.

Vodafone has not yet disclosed pricing details for the satellite service, but the company assures users that no additional equipment will be required.
