Ankara, Turkiye — February 17, 2025:

Turkiye has officially surpassed 13,000 megawatts (MW) in installed wind energy capacity as of February 13, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s renewable energy transition. According to a report citing official data, the country now operates 280 wind power plants and over 4,360 turbines across seven regions, positioning wind energy as a crucial player in Turkiye’s electricity generation, reads a AA/ Daily Sabah report.

“The share of wind energy in daily electricity production has increased to approximately 14%, and it’s projected to rise further with ongoing projects expected to be completed by the end of this year,” said the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, which collaborated with the Turkish Wind Energy Association to compile the data. Turkiye’s wind energy growth is aligned with its broader renewable energy targets, aiming to boost its renewable electricity capacity from 33,000 MW to 120,000 MW by 2035.

In further support of this growth, Turkiye allocated a total of 1,200 MW of connection capacity in the Renewable Energy Resource Zone (YEKA) auction mechanism earlier this year. This initiative, spread across five areas in three provinces, is expected to help reduce energy costs, increase the share of wind power in total electricity production, and enhance domestic production capabilities in renewable energy technologies.

Turkiye’s wind power sector has also contributed significantly to the economy. As of last year, the value of wind power equipment manufacturing reached $2.2 billion. The sector’s potential is expected to grow to $10 billion with continued investments in wind energy technologies.

With energy demand having tripled over the last 22 years, Turkiye is investing heavily in domestic and renewable energy resources to reduce external dependency and create new opportunities to meet the nation’s rising energy needs. This strategy is also aimed at further developing qualified human resources in renewable energy, a key focus in the country’s transition to a greener future.
