Bangladesh to Receive 40MW of Electricity from Nepal for Five Months in 2025

Dhaka, Bangladesh — February 23, 2025:

Bangladesh is set to receive 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal through India for five months, beginning in June 2025, under a tripartite agreement signed between Bangladesh, Nepal, and India on October 3, 2024. This announcement was made during a courtesy meeting between Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, and Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin at the Secretariat on Sunday.
The meeting highlighted key areas of cooperation, including enhancing bilateral trade, electricity supply, connectivity, and discussions surrounding the upcoming Nepal Economic Summit. During the talks, the Commerce Adviser emphasized the importance of strengthening connectivity to boost the economic development of both nations. He reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to long-term partnerships and stressed that increasing trade volumes between the two countries would be mutually beneficial.
Ambassador Bhandari described Nepal’s relationship with Bangladesh as historic and excellent, noting that Nepal imports agricultural products from Bangladesh. He expressed optimism about the future growth of electricity exports to Bangladesh, signaling the potential for greater energy cooperation between the two countries.
In addition, Ambassador Bhandari handed over an invitation to Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin for the upcoming Nepal Economic Summit, which will focus on fostering greater economic collaboration. The meeting was attended by Commerce Secretary (Routine Duty) Md Abdur Rahim Khan and Additional Secretary (FTA) Ayesha Akhter, among other officials.
This agreement marks a significant step forward in energy cooperation between Bangladesh, Nepal, and India, reinforcing the strategic partnership that continues to grow in the region.
