Yasothon, Thailand — February 26, 2025:

Eight Chinese nationals were detained by police in Thailand’s northeastern province of Yasothon after they were found carrying 91 mobile phones during a routine bus search early Wednesday morning, reports BP.

The group, aged between 20 and 28, was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani when their tour bus stopped at Yasothon bus terminal at around 4 a.m. Police discovered that two of the men had overstayed their visas, while the rest had entered the country illegally.

During the search, officers seized 91 mobile phones found in a bag. The suspects claimed the phones did not belong to them, though they were unable to provide further details. Local reports suggest that the men may be part of a scam operation and were allegedly moving to another country to evade an ongoing crackdown on illegal activities in border areas, led by both Thailand and China.

The bus driver revealed that the group boarded the bus in Saraburi province’s Kaeng Khoi district, with their intended destination being Khemmarat, a border district in Ubon Ratchathani.

The investigation into their involvement in criminal activities is ongoing.
