Cupertino, California – February 19, 2025:
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 16e, a $599 smartphone designed to capture a larger share of the competitive mid-range market. Abandoning the "SE" moniker, the 16e directly challenges Android rivals with a focus on affordability and advanced features. A key selling point is the integration of Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI tools including ChatGPT access, driven by the powerful A18 chip previously featured in flagship iPhone 16 models.
This launch comes as consumer electronics manufacturers increasingly incorporate AI into their devices. While analysts remain cautiously optimistic about the immediate sales impact of AI features, the 16e is strategically positioned to attract price-conscious consumers, particularly in markets like Europe and China where upfront phone purchases are common.
The 16e boasts a 6.1-inch display, a dual-lens 48-megapixel camera system with 2x optical zoom, and FaceID. Notably, it introduces Apple's first in-house cellular modem, the C1 chip, marking a shift away from Qualcomm. However, to achieve the lower price point, some features found in higher-end models, such as a wide-angle lens and the customizable Action button, have been omitted. The phone will be available in black and white.
The 16e’s release also signifies the universal adoption of USB-C charging across the entire iPhone lineup, aligning with evolving industry standards and regulations. Pre-orders begin February 21st in 59 countries, including the US, China, and India, with shipments commencing February 28th. This strategic move by Apple underscores its commitment to competing across diverse price points and embracing the growing demand for AI-enhanced mobile experiences.
