Lockheed Martin Aeronautics has delivered the first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet to Bulgaria, marking a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air force. The milestone was celebrated last Friday at a ceremony in Greenville, South Carolina, where the aircraft was built. The event was attended by Bulgaria’s Minister of Defence, Atanas Zapryanov, along with officials from both countries.

Bulgaria has ordered a total of 16 F-16 Block 70 jets as part of its commitment to strengthening national defense and enhancing interoperability with NATO allies. The newly delivered aircraft is equipped with advanced avionics, improved radar systems, and enhanced weapon capabilities, providing the Bulgarian Air Force with a modern, combat-ready platform.

Mike Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, emphasized the aircraft’s role in bolstering regional security. “The F-16 will help the Bulgarian Air Force stay ahead of threats and play a key role in allied peacekeeping missions across Europe and beyond. The Block 70 variant is a proven and highly capable platform that ensures air superiority in modern combat environments.”

Lockheed Martin’s Greenville facility, where the aircraft is produced, currently has a backlog of 117 F-16 Block 70/72 jets, with 23 already delivered to international customers. The program plays a crucial role in the U.S. defense industry, supporting more than 46,000 jobs across the country.

As a global leader in defense technology, Lockheed Martin continues to innovate and develop next-generation security solutions. The delivery of Bulgaria’s first F-16 Block 70 underscores the company’s commitment to equipping allied nations with state-of-the-art military capabilities to address evolving security challenges.
