Ottawa, Canada — February 26, 2025:
Over 250,000 people have signed a petition demanding the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, accusing the billionaire of actions that allegedly undermine Canada’s sovereignty. The petition, launched on February 20, claims Musk, who was born in South Africa and acquired Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, has become a member of a foreign government that seeks to “erase” Canadian sovereignty.
Musk, who is also a U.S. citizen and a key advisor to former President Donald Trump, has faced growing criticism for his political affiliations and comments. He mocked the petition in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), claiming, "Canada is not a real country." Musk has also supported Trump’s rhetoric, which includes questioning Canadian sovereignty and suggesting Canada should become part of the United States.
Charlie Angus, a Canadian lawmaker from the left-wing New Democratic Party, sponsored the petition. He described Musk as an "enemy" of Canada, using the petition as a platform for Canadians to express their concerns over the increasing power of wealthy individuals and political extremists.
While petitions to Canada’s parliament cannot force immediate action, they may receive an official government response. Canadian citizenship can be revoked under specific circumstances, such as fraud during immigration or involvement in foreign military actions against Canada. Parliament is currently suspended and will not reconvene until March 24.
Musk's political involvement, including his strong ties to Trump, has further fueled criticisms of his influence on Canadian political matters.
