Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — February 12, 2025:
Sarawak has taken a major step toward greater autonomy by acquiring MASwings, a regional airline previously owned by Malaysia Aviation Group, a subsidiary of sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd. This historic move makes Sarawak the first Malaysian state to own an airline.
The Sarawak government is set to sign the sale and purchase agreement on Wednesday, solidifying its control over the airline, which primarily serves Borneo island. The acquisition aligns with Sarawak’s broader efforts to gain control over key assets and expand its economic independence from the federal government.
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg has ambitious plans to transform MASwings into an international airline, targeting six international destinations to boost the state’s tourism industry. Currently, MASwings operates a fleet of 14 aircraft.
This move follows other recent efforts by Sarawak to reclaim strategic assets. In January, the state regained gas distribution rights from Petroliam Nasional Bhd after a prolonged dispute. Last year, it took over the operation of its largest port and increased its stake in Affin Bank Bhd.
By owning its own airline, Sarawak aims to enhance regional connectivity and economic growth, further strengthening its push for greater political and economic autonomy from the federal government.
