Houston, Texas, USA — February 5, 2025:
Texas Southern University (TSU) proudly announces that its Professional Pilot program has been ranked among the top 50 aviation bachelor's degree programs in the nation. This milestone underscores TSU’s commitment to excellence in aviation education and its growing reputation as a leader in training future pilots and aviation professionals.
"Just three years ago, TSU had a relatively new and unranked Professional Pilot program," said Dr. Terence Fontaine, Executive Director of Aviation. "Our students, faculty, and staff have worked collectively and tirelessly to earn this milestone recognition as one of the top 50 recognized Professional Pilot programs in the country. Since I arrived in 2018, the goal has been and remains for TSU to become the first HBCU with a top-25 aviation program. This ranking represents a significant step toward that goal."
The recognition comes amid record-breaking enrollment for TSU’s aviation program. With 180 students currently enrolled, the program has seen two consecutive years of record growth, reflecting increasing interest and confidence in TSU’s ability to prepare students for successful careers in aviation.
Strategic partnerships have played a crucial role in the program’s success. Collaborations with industry giants such as Southwest Airlines and the United Airlines Aviate program provide students with mentorship, internships, and career placement opportunities. These partnerships enhance TSU’s ability to equip graduates with the skills and experience needed to excel in a competitive industry.
"The aviation program at Texas Southern is unique to Houston and one of the most unique in Texas," said Dr. Carl B. Goodman, TSU's Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. "As they continue to prepare the next generation of aviation professionals, from traditional aircraft pilots to drone pilots and beyond, we are excited about the program's growth. Through our partnerships with Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, our students gain access to a pipeline of opportunities that will propel them into the industry with confidence and readiness. We are pleased to see the work recognized and look forward to continued growth."
TSU’s aviation program offers concentrations in Aviation Management and Professional Pilot, ensuring students receive a well-rounded education tailored to the diverse needs of the industry. With state-of-the-art facilities and a curriculum aligned with industry standards, TSU is setting new benchmarks for excellence in aviation education.
Beyond its airline partnerships, TSU also collaborates with the United States Air Force, hosting the Air Force JROTC Cadet program for the fifth consecutive year this summer. Additionally, the program is one of just 45 aviation programs nationwide to hold accreditation from the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI), considered the gold standard in aviation education.
Further cementing its expansion, TSU is constructing a new hangar and office space at Ellington Airport, which will serve as the program’s new home. This facility, developed in partnership with the City of Houston, will further enhance the university’s aviation training capabilities.
With its national ranking, expanding facilities, and strong industry partnerships, TSU’s aviation program is soaring to new heights, positioning itself as a premier destination for aspiring aviation professionals.
