Naypyidaw, Myanmar — March 28, 2025:

A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar at 12:21 pm, shaking parts of Bangladesh and Thailand, including their capitals, Dhaka and Bangkok. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 7.7, with the epicenter about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Monywa. The tremor originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to both USGS and Germany’s GFZ center for geosciences.

In Bangkok, the quake hit around 1:30 p.m. local time (2:30 a.m. ET), causing buildings to sway. Alarms rang across high-rise condominiums and hotels, prompting evacuations in the densely populated central district. Residents rushed down staircases and gathered on the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun. The tremor was strong enough to send water sloshing out of rooftop pools.

In Bangladesh, the Meteorological Department recorded a magnitude of 7.3, with the epicenter in Mandalay, Myanmar, 597 kilometers from Dhaka. Md. Rubaiyat Kabir, an official at the Earthquake Observation and Research Center, confirmed the information.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Myanmar, which remains in the midst of a civil war, has yet to provide details on the quake’s impact. Authorities in the affected regions are monitoring for aftershocks.
