Abu Dhabi, UAE — March 30, 2025:

The UAE is set to utilize cutting-edge technology for the sighting of the Shawwal crescent, marking the second time the country deploys drones for this purpose. The UAE Fatwa Council will convene the Shawwal Crescent Sighting Committee on March 29, 2025, to oversee the process. The meeting will take place at the Al-Hosn site in Abu Dhabi, a location chosen for its national significance and historical importance in official and religious events.

Five AI-powered national observatories, including Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory, Jabal Hafeet Observatory, Dubai Crescent Observatory, Sharjah Astronomical Observatory, and Ras Al Khaimah Observatory, will participate in the observation. Drones capable of reaching heights over 300 meters, equipped with high-precision lenses, will be deployed from Al-Khatim Observatory. These drones will be directed toward the moon’s location using precise astronomical calculations, helping overcome visual obstacles and ensuring an accurate sighting.

This marks the second time the UAE has used drones for crescent moon sightings, having previously pioneered their use for Ramadan’s crescent. In addition to drones, AI and smart technology will be employed to analyze images, process data, and determine the visibility of the crescent based on its birth location and visibility conditions.

Collaboration among several astronomical centers and agencies across the UAE will strengthen the observation efforts. The community, especially traditional crescent moon sighters known as Al Shawwafs, has been invited to participate by submitting their observations through official channels.

The committee meeting will be chaired by Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, President of the UAE Council for Fatwa, and Dr. Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Vice President of the Council, with contributions from experts in Sharia, astronomy, and law.
