Washington, D.C., USA, March 29, 2025:
In the wake of the Trump Administration's decision to end federal funding for the U.S. Agency for Global Media, Voice of America (VOA) journalists were abruptly furloughed, leaving many uncertain about their future. On Friday, however, over 200 VOA staff members received valuable career support from the newly established Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club.
The Press Freedom Center funded entry to a major job fair, offering VOA journalists access to potential employers such as the Associated Press, City Paper, and the University of Maryland. The fair also included headshot sessions, expert panels, and even a therapy dog, Armand, to help alleviate the stress of the transition. This event aimed to provide journalists with the resources they need to move forward in their careers.
In addition to the job fair, the Press Freedom Center continues to support VOA journalists in other critical ways. They are actively working to assist those imprisoned for their reporting and offering help to VOA journalists on visas who may face deportation to hostile countries. Furthermore, the Center is organizing a news conference on Tuesday for the plaintiffs and lead lawyer involved in the lawsuit against the Trump Administration regarding the funding cuts.
Although still in its early stages, the Press Freedom Center has already proven to be a crucial resource for VOA journalists navigating these challenging times. Press Club stated that supporting the Center's work, donations can be made through their website.
